Bundle types

Beluga supports several different types of bundles:

Variant bundles

Variant bundles are groups of product variants, where customers can’t change the product variants in the group. You can set the quantity for each product variant. Variant bundles have fixed prices based on the product variants you select. Variant bundles are added as a product in Shopify, so you will see them listed in Shopify’s Products area.

Variant bundles can have variants of their own, each having their own discount value. For example, let’s assume you’re selling a dinnerware set as a bundle, and the dinnerware set is available in several different colors. You could set up the bundle by adding color variants to the bundle itself:

  • White, which has the following product variants:
    • 4 x Dinner Plates - White
    • 4 x Salad Plates - White
    • 4 x Bowls - White
  • Black, which has the following product variants:
    • 4 x Dinner Plates - Black
    • 4 x Salad Plates - Black
    • 4 x Bowls - Black

In this scenario, customers can choose White or Black on product pages (in the same way they can choose variants on any other product page). When they choose one of these options, the contents of that group (e.g. White Dinner Plates, White Salad Plates, White Bowls) will be summarized on the product page to show which items belong to the bundle they’re about to purchase.

Product bundles

Product bundles are groups of products, where customers can choose any variant for each product. You can set the quantity for each product. Product bundles have dynamic prices based on the product variants the customer selects. Product bundles are added as a product in Shopify, so you will see them listed in Shopify’s Products area.

Product bundles cannot have variants of their own (unlike Variant Bundles). Since the price of the bundle can change based on the customer’s selection, Beluga needs manage product variants on-the-fly in order to price the bundle properly.

Product bundle example: let’s assume you are selling a dinnerware set as a bundle, and items that belong to the set are available in different colors. You could add the following products to the bundle:

  • 4 x Dinner Plates
  • 4 x Salad Plates
  • 4 x Bowls

All of these items are available in multiple colors, which allows the customer to customize their bundle if they wanted different colors of Plates and Bowls. So a customer could have 4 x Dinner Plates in White, 4 x Salad Plates in Black, and 4 x Bowls in Grey.

Collection bundles

Collection bundles are groups of collections, where you can specify the number of products that must be selected from each of collection. Collection bundles have dynamic prices based on the product variants the customer selects. Collection bundles are added as a product in Shopify, so you will see them listed in Shopify’s Products area.

Collection bundles cannot have variants of their own (unlike Variant Bundles). Since the price of the bundle can change based on the customer’s selection, Beluga needs manage product variants on-the-fly in order to price the bundle properly.
